pope seated before the holy week. we start with claudio in vatican city. when's the latest? >> reporter: hi, toure. now the countdown is finally started, of course. well, there's no -- usually people don't have the chance to see the -- to know when the end of an end happens because in the past the pope had to die before a new pope could be voted in. this time, we have a date. 28th of february and we got a lot of reaction to the announcement of pope benedict xvi that he is resigning. first of all, look at how he -- well, he abdicated rather than resigning. let's see how. he did that during a low-key affair this morning the vatican meeting with cardinals. wasn't a big deal and he said -- his speech made it in latin. not italian or english or a comprehensible language to most people and it was down to somebody from a local press office, local wire agency to actually figure out that he actually said, well look, i'm going to abdicate. even the way that he resigned or -- sorry. abdicated was kind of low key and he did it as he's done the -- as he's leaved his pontificate all along. low key, s

through the night to clear a stretch of new york's long island expressway and have city-bound lanes open this morning for rush hour. the l.i.e. is the main way into the city from long island. so we are all over this big digout. indra petersons is in long island, george howell is in hamden, connecticut. we begin in boston where the big concern is power outages, how to get all of those folks out. indra, good morning. >> good morning. yeah, today it is also about getting back to normal. we still have 120,000 people this morning without power. temperatures are cold. tons of snow is on the ground. huge heaps of snow. today we have a snow emergency and school is still closed as the city takes one more day to clean out the snow. what you mentioned earlier is a weather charge today. a warm front is pushing through. highs will be in the mid 40s. a lot of the snow is expected to melt. before we get there, we will talk about more snow, several inches is possible and even freezing rain. so everyone is trying to get to work this morning. not seeing too much out here. it looks like people are listenin

they believed they stopped at those intersections. so here's what's going on. the city of rockville changed camera vendors. changed the cameras and what they consider to be a red light violation. let's show you video we shot. here's what it looks like. the cameras will flash if the driver crosses the white stop line. also videotaped drivers making right turns on red but they'll get a ticket if they don't come to a complete stop before making the turn. westbound at research. 5087 tickets in 2012. only 1043 in in 2011. 4087 in 2012. only 756 last year . this is a brand new camera. it only began operating in august. 3981 in five months. here's what aaa had to say about that. >> in one year we saw the numbers of red light runners go from 8600 to 18,000 just shy of 18,000. now, what changed? the vendor and the methodology. doesn't mean that suddenly we have a whole rash of drivers in rockville that think it's all right to run red lights. there was no change in drivers. >> reporter: now aaa says using those stop lines as a trigger for red light violations may be contrary to guidelines that the fe

and the first lady. hadiya pendleton was shot and killed while trying to escape gun fire in a chicago city park several blocks north of the obama family home in the win wood neighborhood. i will go to ted rowlands who is in chicago. i know there's going to be a press conference, you will have a number of officials on this. this is disturbing all around. it's not the first time. chicago has a terrible problem with violence, with gang violence. you have the first lady weighing in at the funeral on saturday. what are they going to do? >> reporter: well, that's a great question, suzanne. and there is in the wake of hadiya pendleton's death, there's a sense of urgency here. as you mentioned, this is not the first time a youngster has been killed in the cross fire with the gang violence on the streets of chicago. but this young woman has really struck a nerve. this was a young 15-year-old girl, who was doing all of the right things. she was a good student going to a great school here in chicago. her parents, great parents, who have encouraged her and her brother to do well in school. she was in the b

in this country. let's start off our coverage with deb feyerick in st. patrick's cathedral in new york city, the center of the american catholic tradition here. deb, what are you hearing this morning? what a shocker. >> reporter: it's fascinating because the resignation took many here by surprise. we spoke just a short time ago with the archbishop of new york, cardinal timothy dolan, and he says he was startled when he heard the news. he said there have been rumors at various points that pope benedict xvi would be stepping down, but when the formal word came that he was resigning, it took the entire diocese, certainly by surprise. now, we did speak to him a little bit earlier. he said, you know, pope benedict understood that, in fact, he was in frail health, that even back in 2005, when his name came up for consideration to become the pope, he mentioned that he was getting older. he is going to be 86 years old in the next two months. and so he understood that. and being pope is a very grueling kind of job, the cardinal said. people are always trying to get near you, trying to jostle, trying

is pouring in from around the world and we begin our coverage with alan pizzey in vatican city. >> reporter: good morning. the announcement took a lot of people by surprise yet it is said the pope had discussed this two weeks ago with two or three people who are very close to him. the pope said he made this decision after long and careful consideration and prayer and thought. in his statement announcing it he said, i have come to the certainty that my strptength, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to the adequate exercise of the petrine ministry meaning he's too tired to go on. the papal spokesman said there was no specific illness that they know of he's not in danger of dying tomorrow or anything but he's just decided it was time to go. he will resign at 8:00 p.m. rome time on february the 28th. afterwards, there will be a conclave of cardinals. they will try to have a new pope elected by march the 24th, which is the beginning of holy week. it's not necessary for them to do it, but the feeling here is that they will probably be able to do that. benedict xvi in

. blizzard dumped a staggering 40 inches of snow in hamden, connecticut. so much snow, the city's mayor says many roads there are still blocked today, at least nine deaths blamed on the blizzard, and as of late yesterday, 270,000 utility customers still in the dark. now, another slippery threat in the east and south. not out of danger zone. alexandra steele tracking the threat coming in this morning. >> good morning, john. danbury, connecticut, seeing ice. a mix of ice and snow. all snow in pitsfield, mass. the good news, it will all move through by noon today. freezing rain advisories, winter weather advisories, done by the afternoon. yesterday, 15 reports of tornadoes in the south in mississippi, of course, that awful scenario the powerful tornado. february in mississippi on average, they see about eight tornadoes during the month. not out qwest, but look at this. a rain tree. today, the throat not so much isolated tornado but heavy rain. yesterday and wednesday right along i-10, i-20 corridor, dallas to atlanta. and there is the potential for three to five inches of rain. not moving anywh

. joining me now is ann thompson, lee at st. patrick's cathedral in new york city, of course, and nbc vatican analyst george weigel is here with me, and we begin with claudio. you were shocked by this. people in st. peter's square didn't even know that it was happening. tell us what happened. >> no, they didn't, andrea. we came around here after the shocking news, and all the cameras came down, and what the tourists saw is what's going on. everybody was just wandering around st. peter's square like it was a normal day, of course, and when we told them that the pope was abdicating they were shocked. they couldn't even -- they didn't even know that a pope could abdicate, as a matter of fact. in a way money knew in a way because the last pope that did that was about 700 years ago. it was in 1294. it seemed like it was impossible in modern times, but pope benedict xvi hinted that in 2010 and a mof times after that that if he felt that his strength wasn't such that he could carry on the very important duties of a pope, that he would think about it at least, but nobody saw that coming. this
